So, believe it or not, the boys and I crept to within a few metres of the crocs, ironically defying what, just half an hour earlier, I had felt was the most unnecessary advice I had ever been given by an inanimate object. Our proximity to the crocs terrified Kath and Caity, who subsequently spent the next half an hour hollering at us to get back, but at the same time retreating, thereby making their exhortations easily ignorable.
Whenever we closed to within four or five metres, the little cuddly toy crocodiles would slide into the water and swim away. I must admit it gave me a mild tingle of satisfaction to know that they were scared of me. Steve Irwin, the late, great crocodile hunter, would be spinning in his grave if he could read this hubris. Iâm sorry Steve, I know they were only freshies, but a guy has to start developing his croc machismo somewhere.
After we had finished gently taunting the crocs, we continued our waltz up the middle of Windjana Gorge. It had one feature that distinguished it from the other gorges we had seen thus far: its height. Windjana has some really colossal walls, which at some points rose a dizzying 200 metres. I couldnât believe that this place was not the global headquarters for the Rock Climbing Lunatics Association, the Crazy-arsed Base Jumpers Society, or Abseilers Anonymous.
That afternoon we took a drive to the other notable local attraction, Tunnel Creek. As astute readers may remember, oneâs torch must be of a certain sufficient standard to be of use to oneself at Tunnel Creek. So, just to spite the old bat who had irritated me at Karijini, we not only took all six of our torches, but also a couple of head-lights, a big fluoro lamp, some candles, a couple of boxes of matches and a transistor radio with a nice bright LED as well.
